SCHOOL-BASED TRUANCY COURT

Reducing Truancy

Truancy Court brings together those people that can best make a difference in the child’s education—the principal or assistant principal, school counselor, social worker, parent, student, and judge. Teachers are also encouraged to either attend or provide feedback on the student’s academics and behavior. Together these individuals gather in a conference room and discuss the barriers to the child attending school and receiving an education. The discussion is candid and explores the child’s attendance, grades and behavior. Many times, Truancy Court serves as a connection to resources when other difficulties facing the child and family (ex. like homelessness, mental health issues, or the need for academic assistance) are exposed during the course of court.
